The most crucial aspect in learning a foreign language is the amount of time you commit to surrounding yourself with it. The more experience you have with the language, the quicker you’ll pick it up. This equates to hearing, seeing, using, and scrutinizing the lingo.

It does not translate into sitting at some desk daydreaming out the window, nor getting advice from poor speakers, nor obtaining all the answers in your own tongue. It involves being happily connected to the language you are studying.

Rock out to language learning on your MP3 player. Read what you’re hearing. Listen to/read items you have interest in, items you can easily or mostly comprehend. As you keep at it you will grow more and more accustomed to the tongue. Just an hour of alone time is usually much more progressive than several of course time.

Beef up that vocabulary – you’ll require droves. Pay attention to how words merge into phrases. Acquire more vocabulary via your ears and eyes. Make your own word lists to quiz yourself on using online resources. Don’t stress how well you can talk the talk until you’ve amassed a mountain of foreign words by listening and reading.

Let’s face it, if you don’t truly desire to learn a lingo, it won’t magically happen on its own. If it actually is your desire, however, then seize power. Select interesting things to learn, things that you will look forward to devoting time to. Then find the foreign equivalents that you will need to comprehend to do that.

Don’t expect the language to be handed to you on a silver platter; you need to go it your own, like when you were a babe first learning to talk. Speak the language when YOU feel like it. Compose foreign messages when it strikes your fancy. Whether its Spanish, French, Chinese or Swahili, no one can get you to being fluent in another language but yourself.

Don’t become a stress ball over the words you forget, can’t comprehend, or can’t say. What’s important is that you are progressing and growing. The language will ultimately become clear to you in your mind – it will happen on a time frame that you can’t completely determine. Don’t forget to have fun and spend enough time on everything. That’s all you need to be sure of results.

If you’re interested in learning a foreign language, then you might want to consider the famed Pimsleur language audio learning program.

The article provides reference to the an excellent option for learning Swahili (the FSI Swahili Basic Course) and a variety of other languages. Most important is the fact that the course is free and from a venerable source. There are paid versions which have been reformatted and remastered, but this is a excellent Swahili resource to consider. It also references the Gutenberg Project as another resource of free materials. Learning languages for free with the internet.

Tip of the day: Use the internet to take advantage of the public domain. Foreign Service Institute Language Courses: Designed and written by the US government but with no copyright protection. You can download the texts (PDF format) and …

If you’re looking for an interactive software course for learning Swahili, the visit Beginner Swahili Software Course for more information. You may also want to consider the Pimsleur Swahili Language Course for an audio only approach.

Here are some additional posts and resources for learning Swahili from around the internet:

Learning Kiswahili – Kiswahili Sometimes I feel that my employer forgets that I also have to learn Kiswahili. It is very time demanding. Not just to find the time for actual lessons, it is also taking space on my mental hard disc. Besides it takes practice …

Learning Swahili – I worked in Kenya for a year, and while I was there I picked up a little bit of Swahili. I would really like to learn more, and I was wondering what kind of language audio books were available online. I am sure they have the major …

Which African language? Swahili, Hausa? So far I”ve looked at Swahili and Hausa. Swahili seems good because it”sa kind of lingua franca, but so is Hausa. …

We’re learning Swahili! – We all need to start learning some Swahili which will make life a lot smoother and friendlier for all involved. I’ll make some cards / pages with the basic words and phrases, and animal names with pictures, so that we can share them so …

The Swahili language is of Bantu origin. It does however incorporate words from other languages such as Arabic. This partly due to the influence of Arabic tradesmen and visitors, but is also the result of the adoption of Islam and hence the incorporation of the Quran which is written in Arabic in the life of Swahili culture.Regarding the formation of Swahili culture and language, some scholars see Swahili as the by product of the cultural interchange between African and Asiatic people on the coast of East Africa. The word “Swahili” was used by Arab visitors to the region and means “the coast.” It was gradually applied to both the people and the language.Â

Regarding the history of the Swahili language, the older view dating from the colonial period asserts that the Swahili language originated from Arabs and Persians tradesman and venturers who moved to the East African coast. Given the fact that only vocabulary can be associated with these groups and that the syntax or grammar is of the language is Bantu, this argument has been largely forgotten. As is the case with any language, expanding territories and movement cause the language to absorb vocabulary from other languages.

Another theory suggests that Swahili is quite an old language. The earliest known document recounting the past situation on the East African coast written in the 2nd century AD (in Greek language by anonymous author at Alexandria in Egypt and it is called the Periplus of Erythrean Sea) says that merchants visiting the East African coast at that time from Southern Arabia, used to speak with the natives in their local language and they intermarried with them. Those that suggest that Swahili is an ancient language point to this early source for the possible antiquity of the Swahili language.<u1:p></u1:p>

<u1:p></u1:p>Today Swahili is the most widely spoken language in the region of eastern Africa and many world institutions have responded to its diaspora. It is one of the languages that is featured in some world radio stations such as,the BBC, Radio Cairo (Egypt), the Voice of America (U.S.A.), Radio Deutschewelle (Germany), Radio Moscow International (Russia), Radio Japan International, Radio China International, Radio Sudan, and Radio South Africa.<u1:p></u1:p>

<u1:p></u1:p>The Swahili language is also making its presence in the art world – in songs, theaters, movies and television programs. For example, the lyrics for the song titled “Liberian girl” by Michael Jackson has Swahili phrases: “Nakupenda pia, nakutaka pia, mpenzi we!” (I love you, and I want you, my dear!). The well-celebrated Disney movie, “The Lion King” features several Swahili words, for example “simba” (lion), “rafiki” (friend), as the names of the characters. The Swahili phrase “hakuna matata” (No troubles or no problems) was also used in that movie.
