The heated discussions in the House of Representatives regarding a proposed bill declaring the tragic Armenian loss of life under Ottoman rule in 1915 a genocide, have brought the Armenian people to the forefront of the world stage these last few weeks.

Whatever designation is given, few if any argue that a tragic loss of life occurred for the Armenian community during the first World War. That event coupled with other factors led to an Armenian diaspora. That in turn has spread the Armenian language throughout the world.

Originally belonging to the region around the Caucasuses in the Armenian Highlands, Armenian has been taken all over the world including countries like Russia, Iran, France, Argentina and United States. As a consequence, the Armenian language was affected by the cultural exchange, resulting in the unique blend of cross-cultures we see in modern Armenian culture today.

Many linguists classify the Armenian language as an Indo-European language and others even try to associate with Greek. The classical Armenian language (translated literally into “Grabar” or “written language”) shows Greek, Latin and even Syriac influence. In addition to this, the Armenian language has borrowed heavily from Turkish, Parthian and Persian both of which are of Iranian origin, to the extent that it is difficult to determine its historical evolution.

In fact, many linguists even mistook it to be a branch of Iranian language owing to the strong influence of the same in Armenian. It wasn’t till 1875 when Hubschmann presented the comparative method by which he differentiated between the two layers of Iranian loans, that the uniqueness of the Armenian language was established.

The confusion regarding its Indo- European origin apart from their strong influences stems from the fact that Armenian shares its structure with other Indo-European languages. The sounds, grammatical features and pronunciation are similar to the dialects of the general Caucasian region. Among its distinctive features, the Armenian language is based on a varied combination of consonants.

Modern Armenian is divided into Eastern and Western and echoes the geographic distribution, for while the Eastern dialect is spoken in Armenia, Iran and the former Soviet republics, the Western is spoken in the Armenian diaspora in particular. These dialects also reflect the two forms of Iranian influence for while the Western dialect was influenced by the literature of the Ottoman Empire, the Eastern owed its roots to the Russian Empire.

The Armenian language has a unique feature which allows its dialects to be divided still further into many more and so on, to the extent where it becomes difficult to distinguish between and/or understand a few of them. The Western and Eastern dialects of Modern Armenian for instance, can be divided still further, although most of the Western Armenian dialects have been erased by the tragedy of the loss of life in the first World War.

Also, every dialect of both classical and modern versions have a complicated negotiation of grammar for instance by the present noun-verb equation, where tense is denoted by the auxiliary verbs, and grammatical device to indicate the gender does not exist. While both classical and modern forms of the Armenian language have been greatly influenced by a combination of other languages, we find a unique blend of influences and transformation which unite and yet differentiate between both.

Modern Armenian as it exists today is spoken by eight million people over the globe and is a part of the rich global cultural exchange that we find so common today.
