In contrast to its nearest linguistic neighbor Cornish, Breton does enjoy a much wider base of speakers, however. While the numbers remain relatively small, Breton is considered to be used and spoken just like any other language that is used by several hundred thousand people. Until the 1960s, Breton was in fact, used by a great majority of the Brittany’s western inhabitants.

The language also enjoys some ongoing measure of popularity through radio and television. It is significant to note that Breton speakers watch most of the available television programs rendered in Breton. While demographic changes among Breton speakers occurs and while the Toubon law may not support the continuation of the Breton language, Breton retains the possibility of enduring as an active language due to its current population base.
