The Irish language is closely related to several other languages including <a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/Scottish+Gaelic" rel="tag"> Scottish Gaelic </a> and <a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/Manx+Gaelic" rel="tag"> Manx Gaelic </a> which is spoken on the Isle of Man. <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p>Although Irish was once spoken across <st1:country-region w:st="on">Ireland</st1:country-region>, it exists today as a minority language in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Ireland</st1:country-region></st1:place>, spoken in specific communities and in officially-recognized GaeltachtaÃ­, Irish-speaking regions.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The <a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/ Gaeltacht " rel="tag"> Gaeltacht </a> refer to any regions where the government recognizes the Irish language as being the predominant language at home.</p>
<p>These regions were first governmentally recognized during the early stages of the <st1:place w:st="on">Irish Free State</st1:place>. The recognition of these areas was part of governmental policy seeking to restore fluency in the Irish language.</p>
