The Irish language is constitutionally established as the national language of the Republic of Ireland, despite the varying distribution and fluency among the population of the country.

Although Irish was once spoken across Ireland, it exists today as a minority language in Ireland, spoken in specific communities and in officially-recognized Gaeltachtaí, Irish-speaking regions.

The Gaeltacht refer to any regions where the government recognizes the Irish language as being the predominant language at home.

These regions were first governmentally recognized during the early stages of the Irish Free State. The recognition of these areas was part of governmental policy seeking to restore fluency in the Irish language.

Even in the Gaeltacht areas, however the Irish-speaking populations have declined. A major cause in the decline of natively-spoken Irish has been the movement of English speakers into the Gaeltacht and the influx of native Irish-speakers who have returned with English-speaking families. Mandatory education in the school system seeks to address this phenomenon and add to the proliferation of new Irish speakers.

For those wishing to reclaim a bit of their Irish heritage, we’ve put together a mix of free Irish language resources as well as recommended products. The websites include a brief explanation of each link in the hope of giving you an easier journey in achieving Irish proficiency.

Irish Northern Aid The purpose of the free 128 lesson Irish course on this site is to give Americans, whether of Irish descent or not, a working knowledge of the Irish language. This course begins with the basics and concentrates heavily on pronunciation and building vocabulary. The free course is designed for persons who are studying alone or in small groups without a teacher, books or recordings.

BBC Beginning Irish This 15 week introduction to Irish provides basic vocabulary and phrases to the aspiring Irish student. It also includes audio to guide the student’s pronunciation.

Gaelic Talk Gaeltalk teaches the Irish language via an online language course. Our online course is suitable to those who wish to learn Irish from native speakers either for personal or business use. The courses are designed to make a direct connection between the Gaeltachts (Irish-speaking areas in Ireland) as well as the Irish speakers around the world.
