Arabic Around the World

Author: Jacob Lumbroso

The Arabic language is closely related to both Hebrew and Aramaic. The geographical reach of Arabic is quite impressive and is connected to Arab conquests beginning in the 8th century CE. Modern Arabic has a variety of dialects and these various dialects are spoken throughout the Arab world and beyond. Standard Arabic is widely studied and known throughout the Islamic world.

The Arabic language has lent a number of words to languages spoken in Islamic countries or in those in which Islamic Caliphates once ruled (e.g. Spain). Arabic however has also been the recipient of a similar integration and in turn, has also borrowed words from other languages including Persian and Sanskrit.

In the Middle Ages, Arabic was the vehicle of culture, science, mathematics, poetry and philosophy. As a consequence many European languages such as Spanish and Portuguese have also borrowed numerous words from it. Even Sephardic Jewish communities of the medieval period living in Spain and throughout North Africa and in the present day Middle East spoke and wrote in Arabic.

As far as the term “Arabic” is concerned, it may refer to either literary Arabic or the localized varieties of Arabic often referred to as “colloquial Arabic.”Literary written Arabic is generally regarded as the standard Arabic language. All other “Arabics” are viewed as mere dialects.

Literary Arabic generally refers to the language used in television and print media across North Africa and the Middle East. It also refers to the language of the Q’uran. In contrast, “colloquial” Arabic refers to the regional varieties derived from Classical Arabic, which constitute the Arabic language as spoken in everyday settings.

Arabic dialects sometimes differ sufficiently to be mutually incomprehensible to each other, especially in pronunciation. These dialects are generally unwritten, although a certain amount of literature exists in many of them. Literary Arabic or classical Arabic is the official language of all Arab countries and is the only form of Arabic taught in schools at all stages.

When educated Arabs of different nationalities engage in conversation Literary Arabic may be used for communication sake.

Classical Arabic can be distinguished from Modern Standard Arabic. Classical Arabic is considered normative; modern authors attempt to follow the grammatical norms established by classical grammarians, and to use the vocabulary defined in Classical dictionaries.

The influence of Arabic has been most profound in Islamic countries. Arabic is a major source of vocabulary for Berber, Kurdish, Persian, Swahili, Urdu, Turkish, Malay Indonesian, and even Hindi in its colloquial variety

The major dialectical variations are as follows: Egyptian Arabic, Maghrebi Arabic (Algerian Arabic, Moroccan Arabic, Tunisian Arabic, Maltese and western Libyan Arabic), Levantine Arabic (Western Syrian, Lebanese, Palestinian, western Jordanian and Cypriot Maronite Arabic),Iraqi Arabic (and Khuzestani Arabic) ,East Arabian Arabic (Eastern Saudi Arabia, Western Iraq, Eastern Syrian, Jordanian and parts of Oman), Gulf Arabic (Bahrain, Saudi Eastern Province, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, and Oman) Hassn+ya (in Mauritania, Mali and western Sahara), Sudanese Arabic, Hijazi Arabic (western Saudi Arabia), Najdi Arabic (Najd region of central Saudi Arabia),and Yemeni Arabic (Yemen to southern Saudi Arabia).

How to Learn Arabic

Author: Ling Tong

The Arabic language is the sixth most used language in the world. It is the language spoken in all of the Arab countries and since many of these countries are open to visitors from other parts of the world, you definitely need to speak the language if you intend to travel or do business in these countries. Most people have the idea that they have to travel to one of these counties when they want to know how to learn Arabic, but this is not the case. There are many online sites that offer instruction in the Arabic language, but like learning any new language, learning to speak Arabic does take time and practice.

The root system of Arabic is one that you need to master first when learning the language. Since there are so many regional dialects of the language, the best way to start is by learning the standard Arabic. Although native speakers will think that you are speaking rather formally, at least they will understand you. Once you become more knowledgeable about standard Arabic, when you spend time in a particular country or with a speaker from one of the Arab countries, you will be able to adapt to that dialect.

The Arabic language consists of 28 consonants and three vowels. Just as in English, the vowels can be long or short. Even though some of the sounds of these letters are very difficult to learn to pronounce correctly, you will still be able to say the words properly enough so that you can be understood. In sentences, the normal sequence of words is noun, verb and object. Nouns are either feminine or masculine just as they are in other languages, such as French and Spanish. English speakers who do not know another language have to get their heads around this concept.

When making nouns plural in Arabic, feminine nouns have added to them, but masculine nouns change how the word is spelled. Therefore it is important to learn how to spell the words in Arabic so that you don’t make any mistakes when you want to form the plural and say something completely different from what you mean.

There are very few irregular verbs in the Arabic language and there is no word for the present tense. If you translate sentences from Arabic to English, you may think that there are words missing in the sentence. Whereas in English you would say the food is good in Arabic you would say the food good.

Once you start learning Arabic you will also realize that many of the words you use in English are actually Arabic in origin. These include such words as mecca, safari, alcove, arsenic, spinach, massage and many, many more. There are many types of software you can purchase so that you learn on your own by using your computer. Through these programs you can learn to read and write Arabic script, listen to the pronunciation of words and play games to help you learn vocabulary.

Learning a New Language

On most people’s list of things they wish they had the time to do is probably learn a new language. Whether that language be Spanish, French, Italian, German, or even Arabic, learning a new language can be difficult. It requires lots of time and patience, and potentially a lot of money if you make the wrong choice!

Learning Arabic for example or any other language can be made easier and cheaper. One of the best resources that, for some reason, people often overlook is their local library. The library offers a wealth of information including multilingual dictionaries and even some books on how to learn a new language. Another cheap way is to find someone who is a native speaker of that language and ask them for help in learning key words or phrases that they find crucial to learning and interacting with people that speak the language.

You don’t need computer programs that cost hundreds of dollars in order to learn a new language. What you do need is patience and dedication. Look on the internet, in libraries, or on social networking sites to find creative ways to learn a language.

The more work you put into learning a language, the more rewarding it will feel and the more you will get out of your own tailor-made program that works best for you.

If you are interested in learning basic Arabic quickly or learning more than 100 languages, then consider the Talk Now Series by EuroTalk. Its a fun and very inexpensive way to starting learning a new language.

Hebrew like Arabic languages is written in the opposite direction of English, so, for a English beginner who has no knowledge of this form of writing it can be particularly stressful in the beginning.

Overcoming Learning Difficulties in Learning Biblical Hebrew

Hebrew like Arabic languages is written in the opposite direction of English, so, for a English beginner who has no knowledge of this form of writing it can be particularly stressful in the beginning. One must take one’s time to get used to this fact in the initial stages till the basic concept sinks in. It is like a right handed person being told to write with the left hand. Once a person gets used to the concept, the flow begins.

Biblical Hebrew is akin to Modern Hebrew. Most of the vocabulary and grammar is similar with few changes. One must listen to recordings to get used to the idea. There are a large number of audio CDs available which go step by step teaching the right pronunciation along with the English word.

The most important things in learning a language is to overcome the hesitation in speaking in that language. You learn a language by usage.

It is like learning to drive a car. You have to sit in a car to be able to drive. Initially you will make mistakes but that should not deter you. Do not give up at the first road block.

Studying in a group is always better and you learn much faster as everyone is on the same boat. Interacting in a group gives you greater confidence and learning Hebrew becomes much easier as you build up the confidence to speak.

If you’re interested in learning Biblical Hebrew or Modern Hebrew, then visit learning Hebrew resources.

The illustrated course materials include a cultural guide. Each unit has different activities, including conversation and notes, exercises, and a self-evaluation quiz.

Unit by unit objectives for each module are stated at the start of the module, and each module has a vocabulary at the end. This course was developed by the Defense Language Institute for use in its own renowned language school and has now been re-released.

This new edition is available at Saudi Arabic HeadStart Course.

Studying a tongue foreign to your own is certainly not a breezy task. This is due to the commitment of time and energy it requires. Using a foreign speech software program could make the whole process a bit less difficult for you. The benefits of making use of such devices in order to acquire another tongue are vast.

A top issue pupils have with studying a different language in school is often the teacher moves extremely quick. The scholars are usually not immersed in the foreign lingo to a sufficient level to really retain that much of it, and having the educator train in such a fast manner doesn’t help things. Another conflict is that the first year of studying a language at school is when you’ll learn the most, and subsequent years tend to repeat what was learned in year one.

If you utilize one of the hundreds of foreign language kits available, you can learn on your own time and at your own discretion. You can be less self-conscious about a particular lesson that is giving you trouble, as software programs will not jolt you forward before you’re ready like in class. You’re not on any deadlines when engaging in these programs, besides the deadlines are ones you set for yourself. Having this freedom gets rid of some of the stress of attaining a foreign speech.

Investing in a software program allows you to attend “class” whenever it strikes your fancy. You’ll probably end up working with the language more times than you would have attended a class due to the convenience of your home (an hour or two of scheduled school time probably won’t aide you in completely ascertaining the language, anyway, unless you combined it with your home kit). An idea is to have lessons playing throughout the day to continually engross yourself.

Pressure will be unpacked in the arena of social embarrassment if you pick up a language learning kit. No longer do you have to feel bad about falling behind the others or mincing your Mongolian. When you study at your house you are alone or surrounded by loved ones, so there is no need to feel shy during training.

Finally, it is a pretty penny less to buy a program in lieu of attending one. You will acquire the same information as a college course and then some. If you’ve pondered studying Spanish, understanding Arabic, or speaking Russian, try buying software. It’s less expensive yet just as effective, and lets you learn on your terms.

There are a variety of language software courses available. The courses on the high end reflect speech analysis capabilities, hundreds of hours of instruction, and lesson tailoring to fit your needs. The Tell Me More Premium Spanish course is one such option. The Tell Me More series is available for Spanish, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Chinese, and Japanese.
