Learning Hebrew: Finding the Right Mix of Hebrew Resources

March 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Finding the right mix of resources is critical for studying any language. Some people prefer strictly audio courses, other prefer traditional book and audio formats, while others prefer an interactive approach using software. Whatever the case, choosing tools you feel comfortable with go a long way to insuring you reach a measurable level of proficiency.

In the case of , it might be even more important, since students of Hebrew often find themselves in areas that might not have large numbers of Hebrew speakers.

The only exposure to Hebrew might be in the context of a synagogue, and of course it depends on what kind of synagogue, since many synagogues and Temples have limited Hebrew services, not to mention the difference between siddur (prayerbook) Hebrew and Biblical and Modern Hebrew.

My own experience probably reflects that of many people who have studied Hebrew. My study has consisted of some classroom study, textbook study, vocabulary cards, and audio programs .

While each has had strengths, the main benefit of mixing resources has been to keep my interest high and to round out any gaps missing in the various materials used.

Well, with that in mind, a collection of recommended Hebrew programs for Modern Hebrew, as well as Siddur Hebrew, and Biblical Hebrew are listed below. They reflect in my opinion, the best resources that should serve most learners (i.e. auditory, visual, and interactive).
