Pimsleur Greek: An Audio only Approach to Learning Modern Greek

April 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

While each language learner is different, many students look for a language course they can realistically incorporate into their busy lives. In addition, a significant majority of learners prefer to concentrate on a method that affords them the fastest approach to speaking a language fluently as opposed to a more comprehensive method which while covering more aspects of the language (i.e. reading, writing, and more extensive grammar review, takes a considerable more amount of time investment.

The answer for many is the audio course produced by Simon and Schuster known as Pimsleur.

The Pimsleur Method is famous for its audio only approach to learning modern Greek language precisely because it takes into account that most people simply don’t have the time to sit down and learn the Greek language via conventional book and audio formats.

The Comprehensive Greek I course includes 30 lessons of essential grammar and vocabulary incorporated into the audio lessons. This translates into 16 hours of real-life spoken lessons.

The creator of the method, Dr. Paul Pimsleur devoted his life to language teaching and testing and was one of the world’s leading experts in applied linguistics. He was fluent in French, good in German, and had a working knowledge of Italian, Russian, Modern Greek, and Mandarin Chinese.

While focused on a narrow vocabulary, completing the Pimsleur Greek Level I program does give the student the ability to conduct the following:

  1. initiate and maintain basic face-to-face conversations
  2. deal with every day situations — ask for information, directions, and give basic information about yourself and family,
  3. communicate basic information on informal topics and participate in casual conversations
  4. establish rapport with strangers in foreign countries
  5. begin reading and sounding out items with native-like pronunciation.
