For anyone learning Spanish, Pimsleur is certainly a program to consider. The reason is because of the audio only approach and the repetitive review approach the course offers. While Pimsleur Spanish courses are excellent, some students prefer an integrated approach to learning Spanish which includes not only conversation but reading, writing, and a much more extensive vocabulary than Pimsleur offers.
If that’s the case, then the Platiquemos Latin American Spanish course is the course to consider. Platiquemos (Let’s Talk) was founded in 1992 by a retired Foreign Service officer who had spent over twenty years working in Latin American affairs, including tours of duty in Mexico, Argentina, and Ecuador. As the Director of Counter-terrorism programs for the U.S. Government in Latin America, he also spent significant amounts of time in almost every Spanish-speaking country in the Americas.
The purpose of Platiquemos was (and is) to make the best known program to learn Spanish available to Americans of all walks of life. The original FSI Basic Course in Spanish consists of 55 Units, divided into four volumes with accompanying audio-cassettes. In order to make the program more manageable, the Platiquemos course further divided it into eight levels, each corresponding in time requirement to a college semester; re-formatted the original for clarity and simplicity; and modified the text to make it more relevant to students in every walk of life.
This also created the opportunity to include some cultural information and some interesting illustrations (Platiquemos contains over 500 culturally authentic illustrations). The complete program contains over 1500 pages of text, and over 50 hours of audio on compact disks.
The latest configuration of the Platiquemos course, also offers a number of impressive bonuses which include Survival Spanish – The Course used and developed by the CIA for learning Spanish. These include Programmatic Spanish Level 1, Programmatic Spanish Level 2, Spanish HeadStart for Spain, and the Spanish HeadStart Text for Latin America.
