If you’re thinking about learning a foreign language, you’ve probably heard commercials for Rosetta Stone on the radio and tv. In this sense, Pimsleur may have less commercial advertisements, but in the language learning world, Pimsleur is likely just as recognized. This is intended as a very brief Pimsleur System vs. Rosetta Stone review.
The reason for Pimsleur’s popularity is in part also the reason for its limitations, though most students who have completed the series are not dissatisfied with these limitations as I characterize them. The reason for this lies in the fact that Pimsleur is conversationally focused and does not for its inclusion of basic sight reading material provide students with the kind of depth associated with most reading courses.
Yet for what the Pimsleur system focuses on, especially in the conversationally arena, Pimsleur is unparalleled.
Rosetta Stone is without doubt a sophisticated program. It provides an immersion style approach which focuses the student on picture and word association as a central element of its teaching method.
The feedback I have received from various individuals and customers is that Rosetta Stone takes longer for the student to acquire the kind of vocabulary is that is truly practical. In this sense Pimsleur has an advantage especially for those students focused on travel scenarios and the kind of beginning and intermediate levels of conversation.
On the “higher end” Rosetta Stone’s capabilities are perhaps better appreciated and its voice analysis capabilities of great worth in the area of pronunciation and vocabulary. It’s justtoo expensive for most users.
