With 12 million speakers, Czech is certainly not the numerically smallest language spoken in the world. In comparison to languages like Spanish, French, German, Chinese, however, the differences in the numbers of speakers are significant.

This affects the resources available for learning Czech and as anyone interested in learning Czech has probably already realized resources are quite limited.

Given the challenges in finding material to learn the Czech language, encountering a noteworthy course is important for any student.

The Foreign Service Institute , a department within of the U.S. State Department created a series of courses aimed at providing its overseas diplomatic personnel with practical Czech language skills. These courses are now available for the general public at significantly reduced prices that currently available directly from the government.

The FSI Czech course is now available as a CD ROM which includes audio MP3 files and a PDF version of the text.

The course uses guided imitation as its teaching methodology. The goal of the course is to speak the Czech language effectively in basic and intermediate conversational situations. The course provides the student with the basic patterns of the Czech language by imitating the speakers in the audio portion.

This is coupled with vocabulary memorization which allows the student to manipulate the basic phrases covered and create a large number of sentences.

Another course to consider is the Euro Talk, Talk Now Czech program. Designed for beginners who want to start learning the Czech language as soon as possible, the course is especially beneficial for those aiming at the basics for business, vacation, or perhaps meeting a friend.
